BrandYourself.com helps individuals optimize their personal brands

In 2008, a young man named Pete Kistler had trouble finding an internship. It turned out that employers were searching for his name on search engines as most employers do, and the results were unfortunate. When they searched for “Pete Kistler”, the highest results were for a drug dealer that had done jail time rather than the Syracuse University student that was actually applying for the positions. Kistler then realized the importance of search engine optimization (SEO) for your personal brand.

He was lucky enough to have a friend (co-founder Patrick Ambron) with SEO knowledge to help him optimize his own links so they would rank higher than information about the other Pete Kistler. But they were still disturbed by the fact that so many other people were having similar problems, and the idea for BrandYourself was born.

BrandYourself, which recently won “Best Bootstrapped Startup” at the SXSW Accelerator competition, helps individuals optimize their personal brand in search engine results. It is the first do-it-yourself reputation management platform, with the mission to “put the power of SEO in everybody’s hands”.
Once you sign up and enter the name that you want to “optimize,” it will show you the first page of Google results for that name. You then “rate” each result by specifying whether it is positive, negative, or about someone other than yourself.

You can also enter which links you want to show up at the top of the results page. With a free account, you can submit up to three links. The BrandYourself software will then analyze those links and give you customized suggestions for optimizing that page. For example, when you add your LinkedIn profile, suggestions for “boosting” its ranking include customizing your LinkedIn profile URL, adding a profile picture, and updating your profile summary. BrandYourself also will track any movements that link makes in search engine results and alert you when there are any changes.

In addition to all of this, you can also create a profile page on BrandYourself that will be automatically optimized for you. BrandYourself’s team states that 80% of the profiles show up on the first page of Google search results within the first two weeks. On your profile you can also link to your other profiles, such as LinkedIn, which will help those rankings as well.

The popularity and promise of a service such as BrandYourself shows that more individuals are growing hip to the fact that their online identity matters. Employers “Googling” job applicants is not new, but the growth of social media put much more of your personal life out there for anyone to find. Taking control of this information is increasingly important for anyone, whether they are trying to find a job or looking to establish credibility at a current position.

Is BrandYourself something that you are going to start using? If you’ve already signed up, what results have you seen so far?
